Living in the UAE is a constant battle with dust, sand and sandstorms, especially during summer, but they can occur in any seasons of the year. Fine, powdery dust creeps under doors and through cracks in the windows and gets into everything. Particularly vicious storms obscure the sky and the sun for days on end. Going out during these days becomes a hazard.
While sandstorms are not very severe inside cities such as Dubai, out in the middle of the desert with nothing to hold the sand in place, they are unforgiving. These exceptional photos of desert highways and other infrastructure overwhelmed by sand shows how intense sandstorms are in the Middle East. These photos were taken by Sydney-based photographer Irenaeus Herok.
How do they clear the roads?
