On 15 May 2010, 16 year old Jessica Watson became the youngest person ever to sail non-stop and unassisted around the world when her Ella's Pink Lady crossed the finish line in Sydney Harbour, three days before her 17th birthday. Jessica set sail from Sydney on 18 October 2009, headed eastbound over the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean. Over a period of 210 days she covered 23,000 nautical miles, faced 40-foot waves and seven knockdowns.
Unfortunately, her voyage is not expected to qualify officially as a record because of issues about her route and young age. Her backers, including her family, have also come in for harsh criticism, with some experienced yachtsmen opposing the voyage. However, with brands and thousands of followers backing her journey, Jessica Watson is nothing short of a celebrity.
Speaking to Los Angles Times, Jessica said:
I wanted to challenge myself and achieve something to be proud of. And yes, I wanted to inspire people. I hated being judged by my appearance and other people's expectations of what a 'little girl' was capable of. It's no longer just my dream or voyage. Every milestone out here isn't just my achievement, but an achievement for everyone who has put so much time and effort into helping getting me here
