Of course, advertisement is still sexist but early print advertisements were more blatant, some of them downright offensive. Could you imagine what the reaction would be if any of these advertisements were put up today?

I really enjoyed this collection of ads, thanks for posting! Found your blog via Blogs of Note
ReplyDeleteNice photos and true life stories.
ReplyDeleteSpoken like true republicans....
ReplyDeleteSpoken like true democrats too...if the woman doesn't agree with what they say and claim to stand for.
DeleteI thought half of them were just straight up honest. A woman scream at a mouse? That never happens.
DeleteWhat never happens today is telling the truth in public, as they're shamed for mentioning the red-haired girl has red hair.
As the Obama administration farms your personal communications...
DeleteActually seen one of my English teachers screaming at a mouse one day in class. Don't tell me that it doesn't happen. As well as my own mother doing that one time when I brought home a gerbil.
DeleteThank goodness I'm not like that. I'm more likely to pick up a mouse with gloved hands than to scream at them.
My brother in law hates them. He can´t even look at them.
DeleteThe farming of personal communications that began under George W. Bush you mean? Yeah, we should probably stop doing that.
DeleteI am quite sure people of all political spectrum's had a part in those ads of the day. And.. what makes you think the comments above were republican? Chauvinistic qualities don't stay within political boundaries.
ReplyDeleteokay, I'm a chick and I think some of these ads are funny, some I don't know what the big deal is, some are dumb. Whatever.
ReplyDeleteGee thanks for the jab at Republicans. Do me a favor and study the history of the Democrat Party in regards to women's rights...then get back to me. Time for you to stop being so ignorant.
Thank you! Haha
DeleteHaha amen!
DeleteUm. It's 2013, now. Howabout study the world around you and how things are today instead, maybe?
DeleteAnd maybe if wonder why you refer to yourself as a 'chick' and you'll find your answer
DeleteDemocratic, not Democrat. It's not hard. Just try harder.
DeleteThe Democratic party of today is NOT the party it was of years gone by. Time for you to stop being so ignorant.
DeleteTo hell with party politics, it's done nothing more than divide people over stupid bullshit and distracted us from what really needs to be done
DeleteUmmm...You think advertisements depicting men hitting and beating women is funny? Gee, how charming.
DeleteShe said she found some of the ads funny, not all of them. She didn't say which ones she thought were funny so who are you to assume which ones she liked? What a jerk.
DeleteWhat are you doing out of The kitchen?
DeleteBeating women? I don't see a man with a doubled up fist in an ad, I think that's a little extreme. But I did agree with your political view. They love to make us fight among ourselves, without looking into the issues that need to be addressed. Hey, as long as we have our flat screens to keep us numb. Dumb Americans need schooling!
DeleteCan't we just enjoy some campily sexist ads without politics being brought into it? : )
DeleteSeriously, though, let's not forget that parties changes. Otherwise the GOP wouldn't be slut-shaming women for seeking abortions in every state they control.
Anyways, back to vintage ads.
The democratic party and the republican party switched places in the 60s when Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law. The liberal party became the conservative party and vice versa. So that argument doesn't make much sense.
DeleteAs an ad agency owner, I find these fascinating. As a woman, I'm not sure I'd have liked them even "back then"...but thankfully I live now and can mock them. Good stuff! Thanks for posting.
ReplyDeleteBack then you would have been making the coffee ;) x
DeleteWhen did you get a computer installed in the kitchen ?? .... lol sorry no offence intended :)
DeleteOne of those ads was so old, it mentioned Dr. Dafoe using the product on the Dionne Quintuplets.
ReplyDeleteIn answer to your question, yes, I can imagine the reaction. Some ad execs would get shot.
ReplyDeleteLysol for feminine cleansing?? ouch!
ReplyDeleteYeah, my mother used Lysol to combat ring-worm.
DeleteThat does sound gross, doesn't it? One of the purposes of douching with Lysol was spermicidal and the birth control aspect of it could not be mentioned.
DeleteI don't understand what's wrong with the Parker pen ad, it's not a stereotype if it's true. What's wrong with having small hands anyway? The rest of them...
ReplyDeleteYet it's not true. Some men have small hands, some women have large hands, the difference isn't statistically significant enough to warrant making whole new pens... granted those at least arent as bad as: http://www.amazon.com/BIC-Cristal-1-0mm-Black-MSLP16-Blk/dp/B004F9QBE6/ref=sr_1_1
DeleteI think it's because they call them "girl-sized hands" instead of just "small hands."
DeleteIt's not even about women having small hands, it's because there is just no reason whatsoever to need a smaller pen. I mean seriously? My hands are about half the size as my husband's and yet we still somehow manage using the same sized pen... This is an exaggeration of small biological differences that cause people to believe that women & men far more different than they actually are.
DeleteAt Courtney Dydek. Awesome response and perfectly worded. I just wanted to add two points: The average height for women in the U.S. is 5'3" and the average height for men is 5'9". I am a woman who is 5'9', which is the average for men and much taller than the average for women. However, being 5'9" obviously doesn't make me a man. Second, we construct difference where there is none and then use that socially constructed difference to justify that there are biological differences. See sex segregated bathrooms, men and women's deodorant, soap, body wash, etc. etc. etc. Really anything including clothes, which are just suppose to keep us from being naked
DeleteThe Drummond Sweaters one is actually something we would use today... LOL... and it's well done
ReplyDeleteWomen on a mountain are a drag?!? Yea, thats so current...
DeleteI think they were referring to the one with the nude female model. It made me smile and I also can see it being used today.
DeleteI think the guys on the cliff in the Drummond commercial look like they might be more into one another anyway. lol.
DeleteThose ads were very offensive and dehumanizing. I don't know how using nudity and over-sexualization of a particular sex would ever be considered "well done".
DeleteThe Islamic clothing one is not an appropriate inclusion.
ReplyDeleteWhat are you talking about?
DeleteIslamic Clothing? Troll much? Islam does not have a "clothing" genre. Its a cultural choice (be it Shalwar Kameez, Abhayas, Hijab or even Nikab)that emphasize modesty to prevent the objectification of women. If your insinuation is towards Muslim women still being treated as those in above ads, you need to re-evaluate your liberal fundamentalism, understand the true value & reverence of a lady in Islam and enquire if Muslim ladies are trapped in the medias paradigm of them. Mostly, understand the duality of life in every aspect and appreciate those differences. Oppression must not be condoned nor can a blurred sense of androgenic ideologies.
DeleteThere isn't one with Islamic clothing, but if there was why would it be inappropriate? Because we musn't upset the muslims at all costs? If we can laugh at ourselves they can too.
DeleteThe Islamic clothing one is a site ad generated before the comment section, not part of the LOL ads.
Delete(Oddly, I've bought clothing from that site before - they make good full-length skirts and their site isn't particularly sexist.)
Imams instruct men on how to beat their women- today.
Deletesensationell honestly!!!
ReplyDeleteNow make me a sandwich!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteMake yourself your own sandwich. This way it is made the way you would want it done.
DeleteHow gay is that first Drummond sweaters ad on the mountain?
ReplyDeleteLike on a scale of Chuck Norris to George Takei, we're talking Bronies.
DeleteNot gay enough! We could use more gay in advertising
Deletesome of these must still be published today since Pat Robertson is espousing this crap
ReplyDeleteI forgot how much emphasis in the first half of the 20th century was put on women's hygiene and 'femininity'....what about men being clean for us? :P To be honest, these are the perfect example of why women's rights has been so hard and there is still sexism on a daily basis, when these are spread everywhere.
ReplyDeleteI actually would have to say that male hygiene has really gone down the tubes for the last 50 years.
DeleteWhen these ads were published (with the exception of the 1970's perhaps) men still used bar shaving soap, shaving brushes, aftershave in the morning, de toilete in the afternoon, and cologne in the evening, not to mention the body deodorizers in addition to the underarm deodorant.
There were plenty of ads, just this post wasn't depicting male centered advertising.
We must ask ourselves: Are they really vintage?
ReplyDeleteAmazing, was it really like that in America? Shew....
ReplyDeleteCheck out Springmaid Mills post WWII ads. Search: A Buck well spent. Bet the sqaw didn't use Zonite or Lysol, but the buck is smiling ; ) SC Republican.
ReplyDeleteAh, the good old days
ReplyDeleteThese ads may be terrible but nowadays we just have a different kind of sexism based on pornified images of women's bodies.
ReplyDeleteI concur.
DeleteI think the ads having to do with 'odors' should make a comeback lol! But I mean ALL odors, from men as well. I work in healthcare and sometimes I wish people would either take regular showers or my sense of smell would have an on/off switch....yuck!
ReplyDeleteBut wow, douching with lysol?! It's crazy how much can change though...now douching is considered to do more harm than good. And were men really like this?!! Like for real?! I thought they had outlawed slavery a long time before this lol! I don't think I would have been a very good wife :-/
As the article mentioned, ads are still sexist - they just learned to do it subtly because blatant stuff like this isn't tolerated anymore.
ReplyDeleteDOUCHING!!!!
ReplyDeleteHow crazy were we???
To remove mucous??
I'm shocked...
I feel sorry for my Grandmothers and mother...
LOL!!! OMG!!! If I were a woman back then I would have totally gone postal....
ReplyDeleteAhh, when ads were ads, men were men, and women were in the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteGood point about women's suffrage. Now that women vote, every election is a beauty contest.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that's the women's fault. It's society's.
DeleteMad Men
ReplyDelete...and some women don't know why guys don't go south.
ReplyDeletedouching with any of those products probably made the smell worse. good ole' soap and water and i've never had any complaints. can't keep him away in fact. ;)
DeleteSame here. :) It's amazing the risks women were forced to take just to keep a love life back then. Shameful. Besides guys should not be the ones talking about smells . . . Some men have pretty terrible smells and tastes in their lower areas.
DeleteAm I the only one wondering why, even with something like this completely unaffiliated, it manages to become a scalding political debate?
ReplyDeleteLysol douche? Seriously?
ReplyDeleteEvery day I find another reason to thank God I'm Gay.
its all the same even now but with slight modifications. If a woman breaks a car driving, only she is stupid and not everyone else. I swear we still think girls dont drive well. tell me if im wrong
ReplyDeleteBy and large they do not drive well
DeleteNeed to go back to these kind of ads. These are awesome.
ReplyDeleteGod i am totally convinced that Whole Feministic moment is again madeup by the advertisers to sell ciggerates and Stupid things to make them at par with Men...
ReplyDeleteHalf of these, absolutely unacceptable by the general public today, sure. But the other half... Yeah I don't really see a difference between those ads and the ads I see today for the same products. Like the bigger breast one, sounded exactly like any breast implant or pill, etc. ad I've ever been unfortunate enough to see. The "stacked" one & the "we'll go back to using men models" I have definitely seen modern incarnations of, some which have been attacked, some which haven't. The shopping list one, oh I could totally see that being around today and being well received, though they would probably replace about half the kitchen stuff with clothes & jewelry. For some (not all) of these, I think that if you took away the "marriage" & "husband" bits and replaced them with more generic terms that indicated a less permanent relationship you would have any present day ad for beauty or hygiene products. And the only real shift in the cleaning product ads is that they are now speaking to women in their writing rather than men.
ReplyDeletePretty sad.
It was the chrich that put the man at the head of the household and the family. Bible baptist chrich I quincy Ill. taught that the wife should be suvmissive . That if the husbend was doing something wrong God would punish him . But what was in the home stayed in the home.I lived with this as a child .
ReplyDeleteI agree to a certain extent. I believe it was a misinterpretation of Scripture, however.
DeleteAs a 59 year old woman who works primarily with men, things have not changed all that much. It's up to women to make sure that they keep progressing, even if it is by small steps. Just don't step back! I guess guys know a good thing when they see it and aren't going to give it up easily.
ReplyDeletesome woman are still afraid of rats and mice and "bugs" and have their men kill em for them --its not sexist its the way things are.
ReplyDeleteSome men have women kill mice and spiders as well. It's not a sex thing it's a characteristic thing.
DeleteGreat ads, thanks!
ReplyDeleteOh yes...anytime a man blows disgusting cigar or cigarette smoke in my face, it's a total turn on.
ReplyDeleteOmg....These ads were from the past, we all are aware that things were different then...I am honestly shocked that something as simple as a glance back at the past turns into this. Everyone should see these ads and be happy at how much times and ways of thinking have changed. Why does everything have to turn into a drama. Honestly some of the comments were just as ignorant as some of the ads. To be fair honestly if you looked hard enough you would see a lot of today's ads are just as degrading if not worse then these ads...let's all keep in mind it was a different time.
ReplyDelete"Don't worry darling, you didn't burn the beer!"
ReplyDeleteBest ad ever!
The 1960s - fighting feminism with the power of second-hand smoke and really ugly ties.
